VALLETTA — The Maltese government has unveiled a revolutionary plan to replace all streetlights with giant pastizzi in a bid to improve late-night snacking. Officials believe that ‘nothing lights up the night quite like a hot crusty pastry.’
Prime Minister Karmenu Muscat announced the initiative during a press conference, stating, ‘Pastizzi are the true essence of Maltese culture. Why waste electricity when we can have sfinġijiet illuminating our streets?’
Residents have expressed mixed reactions. Marija from Bormla said, ‘Uwejj, I can’t wait! Imagine walking down the street and having a snack at the same time. It’s like a buffet with a view!’ While Tumas from Sliema worries, ‘What happens when a pastizz falls? Is it lights out for everyone?‘
Safety Concerns or Snack Time?
Local traffic wardens are questioning the practicality of the plan. ‘If the pastizzi are too hot, people might burn their hands,’ said one warden, who preferred to remain anonymous. ‘But then again, we might get fewer accidents from people distracted by their phones. They’ll just be distracted by the pastizzi instead.’
”We’re not just illuminating the streets; we’re adding flavor to our lives!”
The Planning Authority has yet to approve the plan, but preliminary designs for the pastizzi streetlights are already circulating. Creatively, the lights will even be filled with different ingredients like ricotta, peas, and even some surprise fillings for adventurous snackers.
At press time, the government was still debating whether to add sauce dispensers alongside the pastizzi for ultimate after-dark convenience. Food lovers across Malta are holding their breath.
