VALLETTA — In an unprecedented decision, the Maltese government announced today a public holiday dedicated to the nation’s beloved giant snails. This surprise move comes on the heels of a shocking survey revealing that these mollusks are now more popular than the national football team.

The survey, conducted by the National Snail Appreciation Society, showed that 82% of respondents prefer watching snails slide than watching the Malta national team miss another penalty kick. “We’ve had enough of endless penalties and not enough slime,” declared society president Marija Tabone.

Snails: The Real National Heroes

Many locals are already planning for a long weekend, calling it ‘Gżejjer’ (Island) Day, inviting everyone to celebrate the gastropods. Pawlu, a local restaurant owner, said, “I’m planning a snail festival with pastizzi fillings! Who wouldn’t want to enjoy some snail pie while celebrating the national icons?”

“These snails deserve a day in the sun, not just my garden!”

Critics, however, are raising eyebrows at the government’s decision. “What are we going to do, put tiny jerseys on them and have snail races?” grumbled football fan Tumas. “Give me my football any day over a slimy shell!”

Despite the mixed reactions, the government insists this holiday is a step toward promoting a “calmer lifestyle.” A representative from the Planning Authority commented, “If we can’t win in football, we might as well win in gastronomy and gardening. Snails are just the right pace for us!”

At press time, planning was underway for the first annual Snail Parade, featuring floats made entirely of limestone and a special guest appearance by a local celebrity chef who pledged to cook fresh snail risotto.
