MARSAXLOKK — In an unprecedented move, the quaint fishing village of Marsaxlokk has officially declared fishing nets as the new national sport. Local fishermen have embraced the title of ‘Fastest Netcaster’ with vigor, and the stakes are high as they aim for a place in the national history books.
During a lengthy debate at the local kiosk, where opinions flowed faster than the local beer, it was decided that seagulls would serve as referees for the intense competitions. ‘We need a fair system, and you know seagulls are credible,’ said Tumas, a seasoned fisherman. ‘Mela, whoever can catch the eye of a gazza (seagull) has a good shot at winning!’
The inaugural tournament is expected to attract over a dozen fishermen, each armed with their finest nets and dozens of specially trained seagulls observing the action from overhead. ‘The only condition is that the seagulls can’t steal the fish,’ joked Karmenu, another local fisherman. ‘Otherwise, it’s just not fair!’
Preparing for Glory
Fishermen have begun extensive training sessions, upgrading their net-casting skills while trying to impress the seagulls. ‘It’s all about technique,’ explained Pawlu while practicing his throws. ‘One wrong move, and I’ll end up on next week’s episode of “Maltese Failures.”’ Local fish markets have reported a spike in demand for fishing nets and sardines as fishermen keep their supplies ready for the big event.
“If we can make it to the Olympics, I’ll buy pastizzi for everyone!”
In the spirit of true sportsmanship, local cafés are set to sell ‘Netcaster Specials’: ħobż biż-żejt sandwiches, served with a side of freshly caught fish, for just €5. It’s creating quite the buzz in the village, with some claiming it’s the best thing to happen since the last feast.
At press time, some fishermen were seen arguing over whether they should wear their traditional fishing attire or track suits for the competition, highlighting the ongoing struggle between tradition and modern sports fashion. As for the seagulls, they have yet to make a decision on their officiating gear.
