VALLETTA — In a move that has left many scratching their heads, the Maltese Parliament has officially declared ‘festa-buffet’ a national sport. Members of Parliament shouted ‘iva!’ in unison as they voted to encourage citizens to train in both pastries and pastizzi consumption during annual village celebrations.

”Finally, my passion for stuffing my face with pastizzi is recognized at a national level!” said Karmenu, a dedicated festa enthusiast, while polishing off a plate of freshly baked pastry. “Now I can get my family to cheer me on while I consume my body weight in canapés. It’s like the Olympics, but tastier!”

Government officials have stated that rigorous training sessions will commence next month. Participants are required to practice efficient eating techniques and caloric intake assessments. While some residents are excited, others are just confused.

Preparing for Competition

The new sport encourages not just eating but also strategic planning for buffet layouts. Zaren, a local chef, reportedly is working on a manual titled ‘Festa Buffet: A Serious Guide to Serious Eating’ that discusses the optimal positioning of pastizzi in relation to the birrin. “It’s all about efficiency, you know?” he stated while folding a napkin with military precision. “If you place the ħobż biż-żejt next to the bread basket, it’s game over for your stomach."

"I thought we were going to get a national sport like football! Instead, we get a chance to eat and call it working out!”

— Marija, local ronda captain

In light of the historic decision, the Planning Authority is being urged to consider expanding the traditional village festa sites to accommodate spectators. To maintain fairness, it has been proposed that stalls be stocked with unlimited pastizzi but limited to one type per competitor, ensuring true skill is tested.

As the village celebrations approach, citizens everywhere are flexing their stomachs and preparing their tastebuds for the inaugural national competition. Some industry experts predict pastizzis will soon become part of the Maltese cultural curriculum.

At press time, the local bakery union announced that pastizzi prices will double in anticipation for the new sport.
