VALLETTA — In a bold move to tackle the country’s tomato shortage, the Maltese government has turned all public buses into tomato farms. Starting Monday, each bus driver will be responsible for watering their tomato plants during rush hour.
The initiative, named ‘Tomato Express,’ is designed for busy commuters craving homemade salsa while stuck in traffic. Karmenu, a bus driver on Route 21, said, “Uwejja, I’ve never watered plants while driving, but I’m willing to give it a shot. Just don’t ask me to make pizza on board!”
The new plan envisions every bus turning into a rolling garden, which is already drawing attention from baffled tourists. “Ara, why are they growing tomatoes on the bus?” asked a confused foreigner who was trying to get from Sliema to Valletta. “Is this part of the culture?”
“We’ve gone from public transport to public tomatoes. It’s a genius idea!”
The government also released a statement claiming this initiative will cut down on imported tomatoes, and reports indicate that if you ask nicely, drivers will let you pick a tomato while you board. “Mela, it’s free if you’re polite!” said Marija, a frequent bus user.
At press time, rumors suggest an expansion to include fresh basil on the trams. Keep your fingers crossed for the ‘Pasta Tram’ next!
