VALLETTA — In a revolutionary twist for both fishing and snack distribution, local fishermen unveiled a patented method of catching fish using traditional tal-L-Iżbokk fishing nets lined with empty pastizzi wrappers. The fishermen, known as ‘Il-Baħħara tal-Pastizzi,’ claim their innovative approach doubles as an eco-friendly snack distribution system for local seagulls.
”Mela, we were sick of the usual nets. They catch fish, but what about the hungry seagulls?” said Tumas, the group’s spokesperson. “Now, as we catch the fish, we’re also treating our feathered friends with pastizzi leftovers. It’s a win-win!”
In a demonstration off the coast of Valletta, a group of fishermen dropped their new net into the water, which quickly filled with both fish and a chorus of seagulls squawking for their share of the snack. “How many fish did we get? I don’t know, but look at those birds!” added Karmenu, another fisherman, as he admired the sky filled with swooping seagulls.
Snack or Catch?
Experts were quick to respond. Environmentalists praised the initiative, while seagull activists expressed that the payment of pastizzi wrappers was insufficient. “Seagulls have rights too, you know!” shouted Marija, a seagull rights advocate. “They deserve proper pastizzi, especially if they’re working hard to ‘assist’ in fishing!"

The product is already creating quite a buzz in Valletta. The Ministry of Fisheries is reportedly considering a nationwide rollout of these pastizzi-laden nets. Advocates claim it could reduce litter on beaches while providing a unique economic opportunity for the fishermen.
At press time, the fishermen were spotted negotiating a potential franchise deal with local pastizzi shops, hoping to enhance their catch, one snack wrapper at a time.
