GOZO — Local farmers are claiming to have found a new type of Prickly Pear that, when eaten during a full moon while wearing a L-Istrina jumper, magically grants the consumer perfect fluency in Maltese.

”We were just joking around on a Sunday afternoon, but then Pawlu ate one and started speaking fluent Maltese!” said Karmenu, one of the farmers who made the discovery. “It’s like a miracle! Now, we’re becoming experts in producing these pears, all while keeping our jackets nice and cozy!”

An early test volunteer, Tumas, reported: “I barely spoke any Maltese before. Actually, I mispronounced ‘ħobż biż-żejt’ as ‘ħobż biż-żejt,’ but now I’m chatting like a pro! I even ordered pastizzi without breaking a sweat!” Tumas was last seen attempting to negotiate parking prices with a warden in fluent Maltese while still donning his festive jumper.

The Science Behind the Madness

Experts are scratching their heads. “It has to be the coincidence of lunar cycles and so-called ‘Farmers’ Magic’,” says local botanist Marija. “We know there are health benefits to Prickly Pear, but this connection to language is completely absurd!"

"If I can finally impress my mother-in-law with my fluency, I’ll eat the entire farm!”

The farmers plan to market the fruit along with L-Istrina jumpers, to ensure that consumers have the correct attire during their lunatic language-learning sessions. Future research will also explore how other traditional garments, like the għonnella, could impact fluency.

At press time, an underground market for full-moon Prickly Pears was found operating below a roundabout in Victoria. Farmers are now raising concerns about the influx of foreign tourists trying to sweet-talk locals into giving them the secret recipe for language fluency.
