RABAT — In a shocking turn of events, a small Maltese village has officially declared independence, citing overwhelming demand for a two-month public holiday dedicated entirely to pastizzi.
The village, formerly known as Rabat, will now be called Il-Pastizzistan, complete with its own flag featuring a golden pastizza on a white background. Villagers voted unanimously to separate from Malta. A local resident, Karmenu, stated, “We need more time to enjoy pastizzi. Who can enjoy a decent snack in just one week?”
A New Currency
But the independence movement doesn’t stop there. Il-Pastizzistan has introduced a national pastizzi currency, the “Pastizzino.” The first banknote features a portrait of the legendary local figure known only as ‘L-Ispira tal-Pastizzi,’ who is said to have invented the delicacy while balancing on a roundabout.

The new currency is expected to be denominated in units of 1, 5, and 10 pastizzini, each representing a different type of pastizzi, including ricotta, pea, and the increasingly controversial tuna variant. Villagers anticipate a booming economy as tourists flock to experience the first-ever country dedicated to this beloved snack.
To celebrate the declaration, locals plan to host the first Annual Pastizz Festival, featuring an impressive lineup of food stalls, pastizzi-eating contests, and a fireworks display showcasing the village’s unique culinary spirit. Villagers are especially excited about the “Best Pastizzi in Malta” competition, where only the most skilled pastizz-makers can win the title of “Ruler of the Crust.”
As expected, the Planning Authority has remained silent on the matter but is rumoured to be concerned about the potential construction of a massive pastizzi factory right outside the village.
At press time, the Maltese government announced that it will hold an emergency meeting next week. Discussions on how to handle separatist snack-driven movements have been scheduled.
