VALLETTA — In an unprecedented move, the Maltese government has officially announced that all future public holidays will be replaced by ‘National Puddle Appreciation Day.’ This celebration aims to recognize the beauty of the unique puddles that form after spontaneous summer showers, which many locals have long admired while dodging traffic.

The new holiday will include mandatory puddle-jumping competitions, where enthusiastic participants from all over Malta can showcase their skills. It has been reported that the Prime Minister himself may jump in his finest flip-flops to kick off the event.

”Finally, a reason to jump in puddles without feeling like a child! It’s genius!”

— Tumas, local puddle enthusiast

To make this day even more enticing, the government will provide free flip-flops to every citizen. Residents are encouraged to wear them during jump contests, but they must remember to show some style—a prerequisite that is still under discussion.

Puddle Potential

Critics, however, have raised concerns regarding how this decision might impact other holidays. Karmenu, a local pastizzi vendor, commented, “How can we celebrate lejl il-festa when everyone is jumping in puddles? Pastizzi sales are going to plummet!” The government insists that puddles are just as important as fireworks, if not more.

In a flashy press conference, a government spokesperson said, “Puddles symbolize the spirit of our island! It rains, we shine! We jump!” These inspiring words have sparked a wave of optimism among residents eager to embrace their watery new holiday.

Yet, not everyone is on board. One foreigner, puzzled by the new law, remarked, “In my country, we avoid puddles! Is this really a thing?”

At press time, the Planning Authority is reviewing plans for additional funding to build more puddles around major bus stops for easier access on National Puddle Appreciation Day.
