VALLETTA — In a shocking twist that has left many scratching their heads, the Maltese government has decided to officially replace the beloved national dish, rabbit stew, with rabbit-shaped pastizzi. This decision comes from a group of rather animated animators steeped in rare Maltese folklore who claim the change will boost morale during the off-peak season.
”We believe that a cute pastry will unite the people of Malta in ways that traditional rabbit stew never could,” said Ġanni, the spokesman for the animators’ coalition. “Just imagine the joy in a kid’s eyes when they bite into a fluffy pastizzi shaped like a rabbit! Uwejjja!”
The negotiations took place at an undisclosed bakery in Valletta while the smell of freshly baked pastizzi wafted through the air, stirring inspiration among the decision-makers. The idea materialized after a particularly dreary winter where locals reported a 65% increase in complaining about tourists being confused by the lack of whimsical food items.
Off-Peak Revival
Local experts believe this quirky initiative could indeed have some merit. “If we can give foreigners something to take selfies with, it could help business in the off-peak season,” explained Marija, a cultural analyst and part-time pastizzi connoisseur. “Who wouldn’t want a photo with a fluffy rabbit pastry?"
"This change will rejuvenate our culinary landscape and send shockwaves of joy through our communities!”
However, not everyone is hopping on board. Karmenu, a staunch rabbit stew advocate, said, “Pastizzi are nice, but you can’t replace my rabbit stew! What’s next? Pineapple on ħobż biż-żejt?“
At press time, a limited edition line of rabbit-shaped pastizzi was already in production, complete with googly eyes to capture the hearts of the nation and potentially, its tourists.
