GOZO — In a move that has stunned the fishing community, Malta’s top fishing villages are trading traditional nets for inflatable pool toys in a bid to be more eco-friendly. This revolutionary decision was made just in time for the upcoming ‘Gozitan Floaties Festival’, where local fishermen are now being trained to showcase their new synchronized swimming skills.
The local fishermen, known for their expertise with nets, are trading them in for inflatable flamingos, unicorns, and even giant rubber ducks. “It’s all about sustainability, u għażiż!” said Karmenu, a local fisherman. “We can’t just keep dragging fish out of the sea like we did in the past. Now, we float and dance!”
A New Industry
The festival will feature synchronized swimming competitions, where fishermen will perform choreographed routines while balancing on their newly acquired floaties. Marija, the festival organizer, assures everyone that this is not just a gimmick. “This will bring in tourists who will want to take selfies with our fishermen in their swim gear! Plus, it’s a lot easier than reeling in fish,” she stated confidently.
“Who needs to catch fish when you can catch a wave?”
Not everyone is on board with the idea. Tumas, a traditional fisherman, expressed concerns about the safety of swapping nets for inflatable toys. “Imagine trying to paddle out to sea on a flamingo! What were they thinking?” But local authorities are already planning special signage at the ports warning against using pool floats beyond the designated area.
The festival is anticipated to attract thousands of visitors. Tour guides are even offering boat trips that stop in, so tourists can watch fishermen twirl in the water. Some skeptics wonder if any fish will actually be caught, but who needs fish when you have a floaty parade?
At press time, floats were selling out faster than pastizzi at a festa. The fishermen are convinced this is the future, and who are we to argue? Well, other than the fish.
