VALLETTA — In an unprecedented move, the Maltese government has officially declared a national holiday for the first annual Pastizzi Farming Championship. This innovative step is aimed at integrating the beloved pastry into the local agricultural sector.
The event, scheduled for next month, will feature live cooking demonstrations by the island’s top chefs. Plans also include a ceremonial ‘dough-planting’ event where attendees can plant sheets of dough in fields, hoping to yield pastizzi plants by autumn.
”Ara, this is a historic moment for Malta!” said Minister of Agriculture, Pawlu Grech. “For too long, pastizzi were seen just as snacks. Mela, now we treat them like crops!” Based on a method of experimental farming, chefs will attempt to cultivate fillings like ricotta and pea inside the dough directly in the fields.
“If we can grow pastizzi, we can grow anything!”
Local farmers are overwhelmed but intrigued. “I always thought we should plant something more traditional, like tomatoes or grapes,” said Karmenu, a farmer from Gozo. “But if I can harvest some pastizzi instead, I’m all in.”
Festival Attractions
Festival-goers can expect various attractions, including a ‘Kipper of Pastizzi’ contest, where participants will try to eat as many pastizzi as possible while riding the Gozo ferry. Organizers are also hoping for a record-setting gathering of pastizzi lovers at a roundabout in Sliema.
Experts have already raised eyebrows. “This is madness, and I love it,” said Marija, a food journalist. “We’ll soon see pastizzi in every vegetable aisle!”
At press time, pastizzi were found growing on the side of the road, leading to speculation about their natural habitat.
